Evan’s Wife
by Gwendolyn Joyce Mintz

He had been so final in his goodbye so the knock at the door surprises Rebecca.  She opens it to find a woman standing in the hall.

The two eye each other.

“I’d wondered about you,” Evan’s wife says.  “What you had over me.”

Rebecca tells her she’d wondered the same.

“I wasn’t sure I wanted him back.”

“You love him.  He wants to stay with you,” Rebecca says.

“He wants to be with you.” Evan’s wife considers something, then she laughs.  “I guess we both have him.”

Rebecca agrees with a wry smile.  “And we don’t,” she tells her.
